The enslavement of Hardy and Mary (Bearden) Shelton, included being denied the opportunity to move beyond a rudimentary ability to read and write, which are fundamental life skills. Despite their lack of formal education, Hardy, Mary, and their children, thrived during Reconstruction and beyond, in the Flatwoods District of Rome, Georgia. To honor their perseverance, the Shelton Descendants Historical Society presents its second annual Hardy and Mary Shelton 1874 Academic Scholarship. Our academic scholarship is more than just a financial award; it's an opportunity to recognize and support those who are committed to making a positive impact on their communities and preserving their history. We believe education is a powerful tool and that everyone deserves the opportunity to develop their knowledge and full potential.
